Santa Marija Band Club has stood opposite the parish church since 1910, its history reaching back further still, into music education and civic service since the late 1800s. Presidents, bishops, and musicians have passed through its doors. The brief was not a renovation. It was the first step of a longer story, starting at the threshold.

The entrance already carried weight: a crest inlaid into marble underfoot, gilded mouldings overhead, amber columns and burgundy ceiling motifs painted with a century of care. Nothing here needed replacing. It needed a floor worthy of what surrounds it.

The new flooring was designed around the existing crest, framing it rather than competing with it. A geometric marble composition in warm crema and deep rosso levanto tones, edged in black, reads as intentional and grand without tipping into spectacle, a surface built to be walked on for another century, not admired for a season.

The palette stays in conversation with what was already there. Warm stone tones ground the space, while the burgundy and gold of the original ceiling remain the loudest colours in the room. The floor supports the architecture instead of asking for attention.

 

This is the first phase of a longer relationship with the building, a threshold designed to carry the weight of what comes after it, room by room, through a space that has already outlasted a century.
